As a nation, we are lovers of all things cake – and when your bakes are recognised in awards proclaiming to find the country’s favourite, it feels like a pretty special moment.
At Sponge, we believe in what we do – listening to customer feedback, rigorous taste-testing, and only using the best ingredients. So, we thought it was high time we submitted a selection of our cakes to the Britain's Best Cake Awards 2025 to see if our bakes could stand up against some of Britain’s baking powerhouses.
Having your cake and eating it should tick all the sensory boxes – so winning would mean some serious judging with rigorous criteria, including external appearance, internal structure, aroma, and, of course, taste. And where there's serious judging, there must be serious judges – and what a line-up! Amy North, Editor of British Baker, Chris Parrington, Technical and Development Manager at Kluman & Balter, Laura Jones, HE Lecturer in Bakery & Patisserie Technology at University College Birmingham, and Elaine Hamey, Owner of Elaine's Creative Cakes – just to name a few. And do these folks know their cake?! From ingredient experts to culinary creatives, with decades of experience and accolades under their belts, they can spot a good bake from 20 paces.
Now, we hear you – what did we win? Though we didn’t clinch the ultimate prize (there’s always next year!), we were lucky enough to receive some pretty high honours with Bronze, Silver and Gold medals. Find out which cakes got medals below...
BRONZE MEDAL: Farmhouse Cake
Some say just being recognised is enough – but we are over the moon with our medal for our Farmhouse Cake.
Our Farmhouse Cake is a classic favourite, packed full of juicy apricots and sultanas – a wonderful indulgence for fruit cake lovers. Some might say wholesome, but we prefer wholehearted. Just one bite takes us back to special times with loved ones – and with a touch of indulgence thanks to the apricot jam glaze and a generous sprinkling of demerara sugar.
SILVER MEDAL: Vegan Lemon Meringue & Carrot Cake
Zesty lemon, crunchy sweet meringue, a wonderfully moist and light sponge – and all plant-based? Yes please! We believe our Vegan Lemon Meringue Cake is something special, and we wanted to make sure everyone could enjoy a slice – so we made it vegan!
We’re thrilled the judges agreed, awarding this very special cake a silver medal. Feedback has always been positive, but having a team of expert judges echo what we believe really means the world.
Carrots in... cake? A common cry from children everywhere, not quite believing that this humble Sunday roast staple belongs in one of the greatest cakes of all time. It’s a crowd-pleaser, a chart-topper, and one that has us hankering for home. We like to think it’s the root of happiness (see what we did there?), and our Carrot Cake is crammed full of flavour – from the warming sweet spices of cinnamon and nutmeg, to texture-giving sultanas and walnuts, all finished off with the velvety smoothness of vanilla buttercream. Now that it’s officially award-winning, we think it deserves its own acceptance speech!
GOLD MEDAL: Vegan Chocolate Caramel Fudge Cake
In the immortal words of Spandau Ballet: “You are gold, always believe in your soul, you've got the power to know you're indestructible...” – and we’d like to think they were singing about our Vegan Chocolate Caramel Fudge Cake. Believe us when we say this is an inspiring bake, bringing joy to everyone seeking a plant-based treat.
This cake has two very good friends – chocolate and caramel – and they’ve never been better acquainted. With a rich, moist chocolate sponge, oozing caramel sauce, and soft, sweet chocolate buttercream, this one has all the choco-holics asking for seconds. Feedback includes those truly marvelous words: “scrummy”, “moreish”, and “I can’t believe it’s vegan!” Well, we can confirm – it absolutely is, and winning a GOLD medal for it makes us want to do a little victory dance on the podium.
