This Father’s Day, the UK’s largest online cake retailer Sponge.co.uk, is celebrating the dubious art of the ‘Bad Dad Joke’ as it calls out for groan-worthy funnies from people across the UK, in a bid to find the best (and worst) our country can offer.
The retailer is asking Brits to submit their ultimate bad jokes to be featured in every order of its cake products in the lead up to the big day on Sunday 18 th June. Bad Dad Jokes have been a part of our lives for some time. Despite this, the true origin of the term ‘Dad Joke’ is somewhat of a mystery and remains unknown.
Bad jokes are often one-liners, with a punchline so bad – it’s good. The oversimplistic, often cringey nature of the punchline, brought to life by someone so special in our lives, makes it undeniably funny. Research by the British Psychological Society has revealed that dad jokes could reveal signs of good parenting – teaching kids that it is ok to be embarrassed (in this case, your old man).
So, no matter how ‘lame’ we may find them, these kinds of jokes certainly serve a purpose – even if it is to make us cringe a little. This is why Sponge believes that dad jokes should be celebrated for what they really are this Father’s Day - an art form.
Not only will the dad jokes be shared alongside each Sponge cake in the run-up to Father’s Day, but a competition has been launched to crown the very best. To enter, submit your very best bad Dad joke via the online form. 5 winners will win a Chocolate Pinata Cake, as well as be crowned Sponge’s Ultimate Bad Joker.
