When you get married to the one you love, you hope it will be forever. And anniversaries should be celebrated every year, to help keep the connection between the two of you alive. It’s an opportunity to show them how much you still cherish the relationship that you have with them, and that you want this wonderful thing to continue for as long as you both shall live.
Whether you’re celebrating a 1st anniversary, or a 70th Anniversary, a wedding anniversary is something special no matter how long you have been together. There is actually a symbol for each year of marriage which is supposed to give you a guide to what to buy your other half for the other anniversary. Here are the traditional symbols for a wedding anniversary:
1st Wedding Anniversary - Paper. Although the traditional gift is paper, many people choose to give a more modern gift of a clock.
2nd Wedding Anniversary – Cotton. Something cotton could be cute, but now adays many people gift their loved one China sets instead.
3rd Wedding Anniversary – Leather. Leather goods are still probably an acceptable gift for certain people, others choose to give crystal or glass as an alternative.
4th Wedding Anniversary – Fruit/Flowers. Again, this one doesn’t seem as odd, although if your loved one receives flowers quite often it may not seem as special. So, you may want to opt for the modern gift option of linen or appliances.
5th Wedding Anniversary – Wood. A nice small ornate wooden item might please your other half, but the modern alternative is to give them silverware.
6th Wedding Anniversary – Sugar. If your partner is a baking enthusiast, they might appreciate a bag of sugar, however, if not you may want of gift them iron instead.
7th Wedding Anniversary – Copper/Wool. If you like to stick to tradition, perhaps a woollen jumper or scarf might be a good option, or you can opt for the modern gift of a desk set.
8th Wedding Anniversary – Bronze. We think bronze could be a bit out of fashion these days, so why not consider some kind of linen or lace option as an alternative.
9th Wedding Anniversary – Willow/Pottery. These gifts could still be popular, but interestingly the modern alternative is leather for this one now.
10th Wedding Anniversary – Tin/Aluminium. This one is probably less applicable to modern society, unless your other half is fond of tin foil, perhaps the modern alternative of a diamond gift is a better choice.
11th Wedding Anniversary – Steel. Again, if they are a cooking enthusiast, they may adore getting a new set of stainless-steel knives, but if not perhaps choose Jewellery instead.
12th Wedding Anniversary – Silk. It is still fairly pricey to get Silk items, so they would still make fabulous gifts, or Pearls is the modern equivalent if you’re looking for something else.
13th Wedding Anniversary – Lace. The modern alternative to this one isn’t too dissimilar and actually most might prefer traditional lace items to the textiles/fur that’s becoming more popular these days.
14th Wedding Anniversary – Ivory. We must say that (thankfully) ivory isn’t as fashionable as it once was, and instead these days, gifting your other half an elephant (we assume one carved out of wood or a toy) is much more popular.
15th Wedding Anniversary – Crystal. Still a lovely gift, a nice set of crystal glasses would be perfect for some people. Or, how about the modern alternative of a watch?
16th Wedding Anniversary – Wax. Basically, it’s traditional to give them something like a candle. Most recently, the popular gift to give is Silver Holloware (silver tableware that isn’t flat).
17th Wedding Anniversary – Furniture. Nothing has changed for this one, you should still go and buy them that sofa set, or dressing table they’ve been after for your anniversary.
18th Wedding Anniversary – Porcelain. Just like above this gift still remains the same, although do think carefully as some might not be too impressed with a porcelain toilet as an anniversary gift.
19th Wedding Anniversary – Bronze. It’s come round again, a bronze item is still the traditional gift, as well as the modern one!
20th Wedding Anniversary – China. Although the modern gift for a 2nd Wedding Anniversary is now China it used to be for a 20th. Now, most people choose to go for something Platinum.
25th Wedding Anniversary – Silver. Some things never change, silver is still bought today for a 25th wedding anniversary, so it’s sometimes best to stick with tradition.
30th Wedding Anniversary – Pearl/Ivory. Perhaps the modern gift of diamond would be more favourable to your loved one.
35th Wedding Anniversary – Coral. You don’t really hear much about coral items now, so you’ll possibly find it easier to find a little Jade stone creation a better choice in gift.
40th Wedding Anniversary – Ruby. Stick to something Ruby, there’s no modern alternative, and if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.
45th Wedding Anniversary – Sapphire. Again, it’s still the go to gift today, and Sapphire is such a beautiful colour, any gift you got would be adored.
50th Wedding Anniversary – Gold. Most people would love a golden gift, which is probably why the gift of gold is still the choice most people opt for now.
55th Wedding Anniversary – Emerald. Again, Emerald is still as popular today as a gift as it was traditionally, so stick with it.
60th Wedding Anniversary – Diamond. You can never have enough Diamonds, so why not treat them to a diamond gift for this extra special occasion.
65th Wedding Anniversary – Sapphire. It’s come around again, but some sapphire jewellery is sure to put a smile on their face for this anniversary anyway.
70th Wedding Anniversary – Platinum. Something Platinum is still the way to go for your 70th anniversary, so it’s still the perfect gift to choose.
