Let’s Get the Party Started

The Eurovision Song Contest is an international music competition that is held annually. Most of us have at least once in our lives, gathered around to watch this great event with friends and family, to celebrate new fantastic music. It is held among the counties of the European Broadcasting Union, and it was established in 1956. Since then, it has become one of the world’s biggest television events with an estimated audience of over 180 million viewers worldwide.

Each participating country submits an original song to represent them in the competition, there are several stages that the entries have to go through, and those that are successful perform their songs live on television during the contest’s grand finale. After all the songs have been performed, viewers in each participating country cast their votes for their favourite entries. The winner is determined by a combination of public votes and jury votes. The UK in particular had a bad history of getting 0 points from most other participating countries, however, the curse was lifted last year by Sam Ryder's 2022 Eurovision entry of Space Man, leaving the UK finishing in second place to Ukraine.

Typically, the winning country then gets to host the following year’s competition, which has led to some iconic moments in Eurovision in history. This year, due to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the UK is hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool on their behalf. The Grand Finale will be aired on Saturday the 13th of May, and everyone is geared up to start the competition.

One thing that a lot of people are hyped up to see is the main stage. The last time the UK hosted the Eurovision Song Contest, it was held in Birmingham in 1998, and the main stage design had a Jurassic Park-inspired feel about it, with what appeared to be three metal dinosaur structures towering over the orchestra pit. For 2023 in Liverpool the design is said to have been inspired by a hug, to represent the UK opening its arms and welcoming in Ukraine in particular.

To the UK it wouldn’t be Eurovision without hearing the voice of Graham Norton, who has been providing the commentary for Eurovision since 2009. So, we were thrilled to learn that he will be hosting the grand final along with award-winning Ukrainian singer, Julia Sanina (of The HAARDKISS). As well as Hannah Waddingham, an internationally acclaimed musical theatre performer, three-time Olivier Award nominee, and an Emmy Award-winning actress. And singer-songwriter, pop star, and TV presenter, Aleshia Dixon.

Tickets for the event went on sale and were sold out fast, with the last set of tickets released and gone again, thousands of people in the UK and abroad were trying to see this golden event live. We are a little bit envious of those who did manage to get their hands on one, but for those of us who weren’t lucky enough, we can have a fantastic party and watch it from the comfort of our own homes.
