The majority of us send cards for many occasions, especially birthdays. We probably receive them a lot as well. But we think that a big question is why do we send them? Many of us have probably just sent them, because that’s why we have been taught to do for the special occasion, but why we send birthday cards, probably hasn’t really crossed your mind. So, we wanted to find out a little bit of the history to explain how sending birthday cards became the popular tradition it is today.
The concept of birthday cards as we know them today began in Europe in the 15th century. In 1415 by Charles VI of France sent the first recorded birthday card to his friend, the Duke of Orleans. The card was a hand-painted manuscript that featured intricate designs and a message of good wishes.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in England, birthday cards became more popular. The first commercially produced birthday cards were created in London in the 1850s by a company called Marcus Ward & Co. These cards featured colourful designs and were decorated with lace, ribbons, and other embellishments.
Advances in printing technology and the growth of the greeting card industry led to the mass production of birthday cards in the early 20th century. By the 1920s, birthday cards had become a popular way to celebrate birthdays and were widely available in shops and department stores.
Birthday cards continue to be a popular way to celebrate birthdays and sending good wishes to loved ones.
