A lot may be familiar with Blondies, but for those of you who aren’t, we’re not talking about the singer. Blondies are a confectionary akin to a brownie, there are a few differences between the two, although substantially they fall under the same category as finger foods or cookie bars. The main differences between a blondie and a brownie are that blondies don’t contain cocoa powder (which is one of the main ingredients in a brownie, instead they substitute vanilla as the star flavouring. The other key difference between the two is that blondies contain brown sugar which gives it more of a signature butterscotch-type flavour, whereas brownies use white sugar to help create the chewy consistency.
Much like brownies, blondies originated in the U.S. but it is unclear as to who created the original blondie recipe. We may speculate that it was perhaps someone who wasn’t a fan of cocoa powder/chocolate or perhaps they lacked some of the ingredients. Maybe, like a lot of confectionary items, having to substitute some of the ingredients led to the happy accident of the blondie being created.
Saying that there is some evidence that suggests the blonde brownies predate the chocolate version by about 10 years, so maybe it was the brownie that followed the blondie. An as always, the original blondie was probably a bit different to the modern version we know today.
