There can’t be a party without a cake. Let’s face it, cakes are made for celebrations (quite literally), and they are often used to mark very significant occasions in our lives. We don’t usually think about cakes much, they are just items that are traditionally there for celebrations. But maybe we should appreciate them a bit more consciously, because they do actually make a huge difference to our parties.
And they were once a luxury, during World War II, and during the Victorian era, sugar was an extreme luxury item, it was either very expensive or incredibly difficult to get a hold of due to rationing. That’s why during the war people had to get creative with baking special treats by adding what may have been seen as unusual items to create a delicious sponge. People added naturally sweet vegetables (which were easier to come by due to Britain's homegrown veg drive) to their cake batter to replace the lack of sugar so that they could still help their loved ones celebrate a special occasion.
Cake day is celebrated on the 26th of November across the world. Cakes first emerged in Ancient Greek and Egyptian times, they were originally flat and rather heavy and served with nuts and honey. This probably sounds family and the modern equivalent (which it evolved into) is baklava. It wasn’t until the 19th century that cakes started to become popular for birthday celebrations and eventually, they earned their candles on top in Western Europe too.
So, why not use the 26th of November as an opportunity to appreciate cakes, by sharing a slice with your friends or family. Millionaires Cake - Half of the sponge is hand-made with natural vanilla flavouring and free range eggs and the other half is made with indulgent chocolate. Caramel and natural toffee flavouring create a luxurious buttercream. Pretty drizzled milk and white chocolate on the top.
