Valentine’s History
Valentine’s day actually started as a religious celebration and the holiday commemorated the line of Cristian saints under the name Valentinus. The most significant St. Valentine was beheaded by the Roman emperor Claudius, who had banned marriage to help soldiers focus although St. Valentine had continued to marry couples in secret.
The holiday was further developed when Pope Gelasius attempted to get rid of the pagan festival which was celebrated in February. The pope decided to replace the pagan god Lupercus with St. Valentine, and it was then adopted that the name of St. Valentine was used to communicate affection from young Roman men to young women.
Valentine’s Symbols:
- Hearts – a long time ago it was thought that your emotions were held in your heart, especially love, and even though our emotions come from our brain, we still use the heart as a symbol of love.
- Roses – best known symbol of beauty and love.
- Cupid – always played a part in the celebrations of love and lovers, and he is known as a mischievous, winged child. He shot his arrows into the hearts of victims, not to kill them but to make them fall madly in love.
- Doves – are a very unusual in the animal world, as they remain with the same partner all their lives.
