Delivery is possibly one of the toughest parts of the SPONGE process. The responsibility on our delivery partners is huge, they have to get your order to you safely and on time. To some extent they represent us as a ‘middle-man’ between our bakery here in Holt, and you our customer.

Our delivery is split broadly into two types, Royal Mail ‘Estimated’ and Courier ‘Next Day’ or Chosen Date. Remember you don't have to have your Sponge Cake delivered the following day - simply pick the date you would like your cake delivered on the calendar during checkout :)

Royal Mail ‘Estimated’

With Royal Mail we can send to any UK address with little restriction, this is how we send our cake cards.

Royal Mail quotes a 93% ‘next day’ delivery success rate for first class large letters, so we have to add the caveat of saying it is an estimate, as there is a chance it may get there a postal day later, or in some cases, a day earlier.

Courier ‘Next Day’

For our whole cake orders we primarily use a courier. The main difference with the courier is that we have to make some exceptions for different delivery destinations.

The following postcodes are largely outside of mainland UK, or are at the very extremes of the mainland, so may cause an extra day delay.

HS, IV41 - 49, IV51, IV55 - 56, KA27 - 28, KW15 - 17, PA20, PA41 - 49, PA60 - 78, PH42 - 44, ZE, IM, GY, JE, TR21 - 25, AB31 - AB38, AB40 - 56, IV1 - 28, IV30 - 32, IV36, IV40, IV52 - IV54, IV63, KW1 - 14, PA21 - 38, PH4 - 41, PH49, PH50, BT, PO30 - 41

We then send these via Royal Mail instead with a small additional charge (dependent on weight).

Due to restrictions at certain depots, there can also be additional restrictions. For example, currently we cannot delivery on Saturdays to the following postcodes:

DD8-11, KY14-16, PH1-18

Use our delivery calculator, to get an estimate of how much it will cost to send some of our common items to various postcodes.

Enhancements

For our cake cards you can select a tracked delivery service, which improves that quoted 93% delivery rate a touch, but attracts a small additional charge.

For our whole cakes, excluding the above postcodes, there are two further options to our standard delivery rate: Saturday and Pre-12:30.

When things go wrong

Our delivery partners all work hard to get your order to you on time, but sometimes events, for example a vehicle breakdown, conspire against us and your delivery may be delayed.

We have a standard delivery refund policy which is available here.

Our recommendation is always to set your delivery date for at least a day before you need it, as this gives an extra opportunity to get your order to you for that day should a problem occur.

With this recommendation many of our customers question whether the cake will still be fresh. Don’t worry though! Provided you keep them at room temperature, our non-fruit based cakes (eg Victoria) should last 10 days, and our fruit based cakes (eg Apple Crumble) should last a week.

You can also freeze your cakes on receipt (or any leftovers if you’ve ordered too much!), and make it last months! All our cakes freeze and defrost beautifully.
