This week is Coeliac Awareness Week (13 - 19 May)...
During Gut Feeling Week, Coeliac UK are focusing on diagnosis of coeliac disease. Coeliac disease is still not as widely recognised as it should be, often meaning that medical diagnosis can take an average of 13 years. One in 100 people have coeliac disease however only 1 in 8 of those with the condition are diagnosed. Also, over half a million people in the UK who have coeliac disease but don't know it. Coeliac UK are targetting them to improve diagnosis and ensure they receive the care they need.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease. Gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye triggers an immune reaction in people with coeliac disease. This means that eating gluten damages the lining of the small intestine.
